Tobias works at the long table at the back, facing the wall, because that is where the light is even. The window that cost the most is behind him for most of the working day.

It earns its keep in the evening. The tide comes up the channel and the whole room changes temperature, in colour if not in fact, over about forty minutes.

A small house on a difficult site: two metres of fall, a covenant on height, and a neighbour with a legitimate interest in the afternoon sun. The plan is the shape of those three constraints and very little else.

Timber throughout, left to grey on the outside and oiled on the inside, so the same material reads as two. The frame was cut in a shed forty minutes away and went up in nine days.
